Records relating to public buildings include correspondence concerning expenditures for their maintenance, repair, and equipment, 1862-1934; drawings and blueprints of buildings in Washington owned or rented by the Government and occupied by the Department; and tabulations, estimates, analyses, and regulations relating to space requirements and the operation and maintenance of public buildings in and out of the District, 1890-1935. Records of Government participation in expositions include correspondence, awards records, ledgers, cashbooks, and photographs for the Paris Universal Exposition, 1867; Philadelphia International Centennial Exposition, 1876; World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition (New Orleans), 1884-85; World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago), 1893; Cotton States and International Exposition (Atlanta), 1895; Tennessee Centennial Exposition (Nashville), 1897; Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition (Omaha), 1898; Pan American Exposition (Buffalo), 1901; South Carolina Interstate West Indian Exposition (Charleston),1901-2; Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St. Louis), 1904; Lewis and Clark Exposition (Portland),1905; Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition (Hampton Roads), 1907; Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (Seattle), 1909; Panama Pacific International Exposition (San Francisco), 1915; Brazilian International Exposition (Rio de Janeiro), 1922-23; Philadelphia Sesquicentennial International Exposition, 1926; Chicago World's Fair Centennial Celebration, 1933-34; California Pacific International Exposition (San Diego), 1935-36; and Texas Centennial Exposition and Greater Texas and Pan American Exposition (Dallas), 1936-37. Records relating to boards and committees include records pertaining to the Taft (1906-16) and Keep (1905-8) Commissions; correspondence, reports, and related records, 1902-10, of the Chief Clerk and Superintendent as Secretary of the Board of Awards, an interdepartmental unit established in 1894 to purchase equipment and supplies commonly used by more than one Government agency; correspondence, 1908-33, of the Chief Clerk and Superintendent as Chairman of the General Supply Committee, which assumed the duties of the Board of Awards in 1910 and functioned until 1933; and correspondence relating to awarding contracts 1918-24. Miscellaneous items maintained among the files of the Chief Clerk include a manuscript volume of George Washington's expenses as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, 1775-83. There are also records relating to the purchase of Louisiana and the Government issue of stock in payment for the territory, 1803-4, to canal construction, 1830-67, to the public debt of the Republic of Texas, 1837-40 and 1856, and newspaper clippings concerning the Department, 1913-21.
